PAGLA Parents & Family Members, Coaches, Officials, Directors, and Other Leadership,

The following is an important message from PAGLA regarding a suspension of the 2020 PAGLA lacrosse season until April 18.  Additional details follow below.

PAGLA is tremendously grateful for the hundreds of PAGLA volunteers who enthusiastically work to bring enjoyable experiences to over 3,500 girls in three states and over 50 municipalities and all the family members that make these efforts possible. We consider this extended community as our family.  The safety and wellbeing of our girls has always been paramount, and recent events related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) underscore a need to look after the wellbeing of our PAGLA family.

While health experts emphasize the risk of COVID-19 infection to most of us is low, these same experts say there is significant risk to the elderly and infirmed. Further, COVID-19 is highly infectious and can be spread while a person has no symptoms. Numerous area schools have been closed either temporarily or for unspecified periods. In many cases, athletic fields are being restricted from any use. Under these conditions, PAGLA has real concerns about promoting recreational events.

Therefore, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 throughout PAGLA’s extended community, the PAGLA Board has voted effective today, March 13 2020, to suspend the 2020 PAGLA lacrosse season until April 18. PAGLA’s Board will reconvene at the end of this month and again before April 18 to reassess whether conditions in our area support resumption of our season. We will continue to provide guidance as we learn more.

Our decision to suspend the season does not come easy. We know this is a disappointment to both our girls and our extended lacrosse family. We trust everyone understands PAGLA is asking us all to support these actions as a civic duty in support of those at greatest risk from an invisible threat. We also hope that our announcement allows you to focus on personal needs, which increasingly present us all with unique challenges.

As many are aware, our region has recently experienced intermittent school closings due to identified cases of COVID-19. For those seeking information about COVID-19, United States Center for Disease Control has prepared the following:

In anticipation of many questions you may have, we have prepared the following answers to what we think will be common questions. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have additional questions.

How will this affect the game schedule?

PAGLA currently anticipates starting games on April 18 as currently scheduled. PAGLA is not currently making plans to reschedule games canceled due to the season suspension. Teams may coordinate among themselves to rescheduling games for a date after April 18 as long as the new game time does not affect scheduled PAGLA games or conflict with field closings.

Counter games which determine playoff standing and eligibility can also be rescheduled. The outcome of counter games should not be considered towards playoff standings unless all contending teams can play the same number of games.

Will this affect the Playday being held May 30 and 31?

We do not know but we do not have any plans to cancel. Our reservation for the Playday remains active and for our use as conditions allow.

Will this weekend’s USL Level 1 & Level 2 CDP coaches’ training be held?

No, out of an abundance of caution, USL and PAGLA have postponed this training until further notice. USL is sending notice to anyone who has registered and will provide refunds. In lieu of a refund, USL will also offer free registration for most courses for those interested.

As a parent, how do you get a refund for the season?

This will be a matter for the local lacrosse program with which you originally registered.

My daughter loves lacrosse. What do we do now?

Fortunately, we have a lot of love for the game too! A LARGE community is working on activities that your girls can do in the house and outside to keep occupied. If you have a little concern about your daughter cradling in the house, take comfort that you’re 100% normal like the rest of us! Check out Swax for a great, safer option to rubber balls made for indoor use: https://www.swaxlax.com/

Want to order products at a discount? We’ve arranged for Dick’s Sporting Goods to provide a 20% off coupon good for THIS weekend: Link for 20%-off coupon 😊 We believe you can use this online, but as of 5pm on Friday, Dick’s has not indicated if this is the case. We are working on a subsequent online offer if you are not able to use the above this weekend.

As a US Lacrosse Member, you will also have access to the Mobile Coach app which gives access to over 500 lacrosse drills, with diagrams and videos on your iOS or Android device. Users can sort by skill level, gender, and even the positional skills! Get the app here:  https://www.uslacrosse.org/coaches/mobile-coach

With all of our deepest and best wishes,

The PAGLA Board of Directors
